Nano Banana 2.1 for Freelancers: Try the New Image Model, or Stick With What You Have?

Google made Gemini Nano Banana 2.1 (gemini-nano-banana-2.1) generally available on 6 Oct 2026. It's an update to Nano Banana 2 (gemini-3.1-flash-image) with better visual quality, text rendering, multi-turn consistency, and panoramic fixes. The same day Google deprecated Nano Banana 2 and told developers to migrate to 2.1. On the paid API, a Standard 1K image on 2.1 is about half the per-image rate of Nano Banana 2 ($0.0336 vs $0.067).

For Nano Banana 2.1 freelancers the decision is a migrate sheet, not a countdown. Try / switch (API) if you still call gemini-3.1-flash-image — change the model ID, re-run a non-client regression set, compare quality against the published unit cost. Try (Gemini app / Flow) if 2.1 shows up in your picker. Skip if you don't ship Gemini images at all, or you already pay for Nano Banana Pro quality. Wait if your org forbids model-ID changes until Google names a shutdown date on the deprecations page — no shutdown date has been announced for Nano Banana 2. Don't invent one.

What Nano Banana 2.1 is

Gemini Nano Banana 2.1 (gemini-nano-banana-2.1) is a high-efficiency image generation and conversational editing model. It's the update to Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image), and the efficient counterpart to Gemini 3 Pro Image (Nano Banana Pro). The model card says it's based on Gemini 3.6 Flash. GA and the model card both land on 6 October 2026.

It is not Pro Image. Google's image-generation guide positions 2.1 as the primary high-efficiency workhorse; Nano Banana 2 Lite as the fastest/cheapest path (1K only; not optimized for multi-ref / multi-turn); and Nano Banana Pro as the professional quality tier. New projects are recommended to use 2.1. Nano Banana 2 is still listed for high-volume work — and marked deprecated.

Per the model card, 2.1 is distributed in the Gemini App, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, Google Search AI Mode, Google Ads, Google Flow, and Google Stitch.

What Google deprecated (and what they didn't date)

This is the lock that matters for freelancers:

Google's changelog (6 Oct) says gemini-3.1-flash-image is deprecated (no shutdown date announced). Migrate to gemini-nano-banana-2.1. The deprecations table (updated 2026-10-07 UTC) lists the same model with shutdown column “No shutdown date announced” and recommended replacement gemini-nano-banana-2.1. gemini-nano-banana-2.1 itself also has no shutdown date announced.

So: deprecated ≠ timed kill. Treat the migration as a quality-and-cost recommendation, not a calendar panic. If a blog or a reseller invents a hard sunset, ignore it until Google's deprecations page names one. Re-check that page before you delete a working pipeline.

API math in plain English

From Google's pricing page (Standard, paid tier, USD — re-check at paste time):

  • Nano Banana 2.1: input $1.50 / 1M (text/image/video); image output $30 / 1M tokens → about $0.0336 per 1K, $0.0504 per 2K, $0.113 per 4K image. Free Tier column: Not available (paid API).
  • Nano Banana 2 (gemini-3.1-flash-image): image output $60 / 1M → about $0.067 per 1K, $0.101 per 2K, $0.151 per 4K.

Rough comparison you can state without inventing a spreadsheet: a Standard 1K image on 2.1 is about half the per-image rate of Nano Banana 2 ($0.0336 vs $0.067). Batch tiers exist at lower rates on the same pricing page. We won't convert any of that to ZAR, and we won't invent earnings or "images per dollar" beyond those published equivalents.

If you already budget API meters across vendors, the habit in our API cost guide for freelancers still applies — just don't carry Claude or OpenAI numbers over to Gemini image output.

Quality and features that matter for freelancers

From the model docs and changelog (claims, not our hands-on lab):

  • Visual quality / realism improved across 1K, 2K, and 4K (default 1K).
  • Panoramic tiling fixed on wide aspect ratios 1:4, 4:1, 1:8, 8:1 at 2K/4K — useful if you've been fighting seams on banners.
  • Text rendering and infographic layout enhanced — the poster / social-pack use case.
  • Multi-image fusion up to 14 reference images (up to 4 characters / 10 objects).
  • Grounding with Google Web and Image Search (paid grounding after the free monthly pool — we won't invent remaining counts; check your console).
  • Configurable Thinking levels: minimal, medium (default), high.

The model card also lists known limitations to keep honest: possible hallucinations; occasional slowness or timeouts; small/blurry text issues; imperfect character consistency; spatial left/right confusion; knowledge-cutoff notes inherited from the Gemini 3.6 Flash family. Dry-run the three prompts you actually bill for before you trust a client poster.

App vs API vs Flow

Distribution is wide on paper. Where you see 2.1 depends on surface and plan:

  • Gemini API / AI Studio: change the model string to gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Paid Standard pricing as above; Free Tier not available on that pricing column.
  • Gemini App: listed on the model card. We won't invent free-tier quotas, Google AI Plus/Pro image caps, or whether every Google account in your country sees 2.1 in the picker today. If your plan UI shows it, spot-check. If it doesn't, keep reading the changelog.
  • Google Flow: also on the distribution list. If Flow is already part of your stills pipeline, our Google Flow on iOS note is the surface context — this sheet is about the model ID and the deprecate-migrate decision, not a Flow rewrite.
  • Search AI Mode, Ads, Stitch: listed; out of scope for a freelancer stills sheet unless you already ship there.

Honest UNKNOWN: exact Gemini-app generation quotas by plan. Point yourself at your Gemini / Google AI plan UI — no fake ZAR, no guessed daily caps.

Try / Switch / Skip / Wait sheet

Try / switch (API) if you already bill Gemini image API (or AI Studio) and still call gemini-3.1-flash-image. Change the model ID to gemini-nano-banana-2.1, re-run a non-client 1K regression set (text poster + character edit + wide aspect), then compare quality vs the published ~half 1K unit cost.

Try (Gemini app / Flow) if you generate client-adjacent stills inside Google's consumer surfaces and 2.1 appears in your model/tool picker — spot-check the same three prompts you use for social packs before a paid brief.

Skip for now if you don't ship Gemini images at all (Midjourney / Firefly / Canva-only stack), or you only need Nano Banana Pro quality and already pay for that path. Generator choice lives in our Midjourney vs free alternatives guide — this sheet won't re-litigate it.

Wait if your org forbids model-ID changes until a named Google shutdown date lands on the deprecations page. Keep reading the changelog; don't invent a deadline. Optional: park Lite for ultra-cheap 1K-only volume while you wait.

The Joburg reality check

Dry-run three prompts on fibre you trust — a text-heavy poster, a character edit, a wide aspect — before a paid brief. Keep the old model ID behind a feature flag until the client signs off the new stills. Deprecated does not mean "gone tomorrow" on Google's primary pages; it means migrate on your schedule with a log, not a rumour. That's how we'd run it from a Joburg desk. It works the same anywhere.

FAQ

Is Nano Banana 2 shutting down on a published date?
No published date. Google's changelog and deprecations page both say no shutdown date announced for gemini-3.1-flash-image. Migrate to gemini-nano-banana-2.1 is the recommendation — not a calendar we invent.

What's the model ID to call?
gemini-nano-banana-2.1 for Nano Banana 2.1. The deprecated ID is gemini-3.1-flash-image (Nano Banana 2).

Is 2.1 cheaper than 2 on the API?
On Standard paid tier, yes for the published per-image equivalents: about $0.0336 vs $0.067 per 1K image. Check 2K/4K rows and Batch rates on Google's pricing page before you forecast a month.

Do I need Google AI Pro to try it in the Gemini app?
We won't invent plan gates. The model card lists Gemini App distribution; whether your account sees 2.1 depends on your plan UI and rollout. Check the picker — don't trust a guessed quota.
