Midjourney looks great in a portfolio. Clients ask three things: can I use this commercially, does it match the brief, and what did it cost. This is a buy/skip matrix — Midjourney vs cheaper or free-ish paths (ChatGPT images, Firefly, FLUX-family options). Not the Canva Magic vs Midjourney design-workflow piece; that’s a different post.
Start with the client need (not the prettiest demo)
Before you open a generator, write this down:
- Deliverable: e.g. IG carousel draft, hero for a landing page, WhatsApp promo, print-ish poster
- Must look like: brand colours / photo-real / illustration / “don’t look AI”
- Rights: client commercial use? ads? resale?
- Volume: 3 heroes vs 30 variants
- Budget: your tool cost must fit the invoice
Thirty on-brand social templates with text? A design tool usually beats a pure image generator. One striking hero? Midjourney often wins on look — if your plan covers commercial use.
Midjourney Plans & Commercial Use
Per Midjourney’s plan comparison / Terms (recheck Comparing Midjourney Plans and their ToS):
| Plan | Monthly USD (list) | Annual (effective /mo) | Rough fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | ~$8 | Light use; paid = commercial path for most solos |
| Standard | $30 | ~$24 | Common freelancer volume (Relax mode on images) |
| Pro | $60 | ~$48 | Higher concurrency; Stealth; required tier if company gross revenue **>$1M USD/year** |
| Mega | $120 | ~$96 | Heavy volume |
Commercial notes freelancers actually need:
- Paid subscription is the path Midjourney describes for using outputs commercially (free-trial / non-subscriber rules are stricter — don’t sell trial outputs).
- Companies with more than $1,000,000 USD gross revenue per year must use Pro or Mega under Midjourney’s stated terms for that ownership/commercial path. Most solo freelancers under that threshold: Basic/Standard can be enough if you’re subscribed when you generate.
- Always read the live Terms before a big brand job. We don’t invent legal advice — when unsure, put the risk in the client contract or use a tool the client already licenses (e.g. Firefly via Adobe).
Free AI Image Alternatives: ChatGPT, Firefly, FLUX
ChatGPT image generation (OpenAI)
Best for: quick concept frames, simple social drafts, “good enough” when you already pay ChatGPT Plus/Go.
Watch: limits differ by plan (ChatGPT pricing); commercial use follows OpenAI’s terms — check before client ads.
Skip as only tool when: you need Midjourney-level stylised control or Stealth / high volume heroes.
Adobe Firefly
Best for: clients already in Creative Cloud; marketing teams that want Adobe’s commercial positioning and Photoshop/Express workflow.
Watch: features and generative credits depend on Adobe plan — verify on Adobe’s Firefly / plan pages before promising unlimited client work.
Skip when: neither you nor the client has Adobe and the brief is one-off art direction (Midjourney may be cheaper than buying Adobe just for that).
FLUX-family options (Black Forest Labs & hosts)
Best for: experimenting with strong open/API image models; local or third-party hosts when you want alternatives to Midjourney’s Discord/web flow. See Black Forest Labs for current FLUX models / API / open weights.
Watch: commercial rights depend on which model + which host + which license you use. “FLUX” is not one free commercial blanket — read the specific license (API vs open weights vs third-party UI).
Skip when: you need a simple paid commercial story for a nervous client tomorrow morning (Midjourney paid plan or Firefly is clearer to explain).
Midjourney vs Free Alternatives: Decision Matrix
| Situation | Lean to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 hero images, look is the sell | Midjourney Standard (or Basic if light) | Quality + clear paid commercial path for most solos |
| Client company **>$1M/yr** revenue | Midjourney **Pro/Mega** (per their terms) or Firefly/Adobe | Don’t risk Basic/Standard on that clause |
| 20+ layout-heavy social posts | Design tool (+ light AI fill) — not Midjourney-only | Text/layout > raw gens |
| Already on ChatGPT Plus | ChatGPT images for drafts; Midjourney only if hero fails | Don’t double-pay on day one |
| Client supplies Adobe | Firefly in their stack | Rights conversation stays inside their license |
| Offline / cheap experiments | FLUX via allowed open/API path | Confirm license before billing |
Delivery checklist (before you send files)
- Generated on a paid plan that matches the job’s commercial rules
- Saved prompt + seed/settings (so you can revise)
- Human edit pass (crop, text, brand colours) — don’t ship raw if it looks “AI default”
- Client-safe: no obvious trademark/celebrity lookalikes you can’t clear
- License note in your invoice/email: which tool + that terms can change
- Separated hero (paid Midjourney/Firefly) vs volume drafts (cheaper path)
Freelancer cost framing (ZAR-aware)
Think in client packs, not vanity gens:
- Hero pack: 2–3 Midjourney heroes + your edit — bill the look
- Volume pack: ChatGPT/Firefly/Canva-path drafts for stories/WhatsApp — bill the turnaround
- Tool USD hits your card in ZAR — keep Midjourney months where you have paying graphics work; pause if the month is copy-only
No invented “average freelance rate.” Your floor = tool cost + hours + platform fees.
