Modern Warfare 4 on PS5: Pre-Order for Early Access, Wait, or Skip?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday 23 Oct 2026, and the pre-order pitch is a week of the Campaign before everyone else, from Friday 16 Oct. Before you pay, read the fine print. That early access is only for digital pre-orders of the Standard or Vault Edition. A disc pre-order does not get it. And it's Campaign only. Multiplayer and DMZ open for everyone on 23 Oct.

That changes the maths for a lot of players. If you mainly play online, a pre-order buys you some cosmetics and not much else. If you want the story early and you know you'll buy anyway, the digital pre-order makes sense.

Here's the short version. Pre-order digital if you want the Campaign on 16 Oct. Wait if you live in Multiplayer or DMZ. Skip for now if you don't have PS Plus and only want online play, or if you're still on a PS4.

Affiliate disclosure: some product or store links may later be affiliate or referral links. Facts in this post come from Activision's Call of Duty Blog and support pages, the PlayStation Blog and the official US and South African PlayStation Store pages, checked on 8 Oct 2026 (SAST). Store prices and dates can change, so check the store yourself before you buy.

What Modern Warfare 4 is

Infinity Ward leads development, and the game launches worldwide on 23 Oct on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Battle.net, Xbox on PC and Steam) and Nintendo Switch 2.

The Campaign is set during a North Korean invasion of South Korea. You play Private Park, a young South Korean soldier seeing combat for the first time. Captain Price is back too, described by Activision as "operator-turned-outlaw." The story moves from trench warfare in Korea to New York, chases through Paris and SAS night raids in Mumbai.

There are three parts to the game: Campaign, Multiplayer and the extraction mode DMZ. All three launch together on 23 Oct. Only the Campaign gets the early start.

Campaign Early Access on 16 Oct: who actually gets it

Activision's Call of Duty Blog spells it out. "Starting on Friday, October 16, players who have digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased" the game get early access to the Campaign. On PS5, that applies to the Standard Digital Edition and the Vault Edition. The PlayStation Store listing shows the same thing: "Campaign Early Access, starting October 16th" sits in the digital pre-order bonuses.

Three things people miss:

  1. Physical copies aren't included. Activision's editions page lists Campaign Early Access under "all digital editions," and describes the physical edition as the full base game. A disc pre-order doesn't get the 16 Oct start.
  2. It's the Campaign only. You can't jump into Multiplayer or DMZ early with it.
  3. The date can move. Activision's footnote says "actual platform availability and start date subject to change."

IGN Middle East points out that this is the first Call of Duty with Campaign early access since Modern Warfare III in 2023. Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 both skipped it.

Editions and store prices

When we checked the official PlayStation Store pages on 8 Oct 2026 at about 11:45 SAST, these were the listed prices:

EditionUS PlayStation StoreSA PlayStation StoreCampaign from 16 Oct?Notes
Standard (digital)$69.99R1,499Yes, as a pre-orderIncludes the digital pre-order bonuses
Vault Edition (digital only)$99.99R1,999Yes, as a pre-orderExtra in-game content; 10% loyalty discount if you qualify
Physical discSet by retailersSet by retailers: check the shopNoFull base game; can't be upgraded to Vault

Those are list prices on the day we looked. Store prices change, so treat them as a snapshot.

Digital pre-order bonuses, per the PlayStation Store listing, include the Inner Circuit Weapon Blueprint in MW4 at launch, plus items you can use straight away in Black Ops 7 and Warzone: the Hunter Killer Operator Skin and the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack.

The Vault Edition adds what Sony's listing calls "additional premium content." We're not listing all of it here; check the edition breakdown on the store before you pay the extra. Activision's support page adds two useful points. Vault is digital-only, and Standard Digital owners can upgrade to it later. Physical copies can't be upgraded.

The loyalty discount. The PlayStation Blog says eligible players get 10% off the Vault Edition. You must "own and have played a Call of Duty title released in 2019 or after on the same platform account," not counting free-to-play or mobile games. It's for pre-orders only and valid until 23 Oct. We're not quoting a discounted price, because it depends on your account. If you qualify, you should see it at checkout.

If you'd rather buy a disc or a code from a marketplace seller, check the seller and the region first. Our grey import marketplace checklist covers what to look for.

Do you need PS Plus?

For online play, yes. The PlayStation Store legal text says "Online Multiplayer requires a PlayStation Plus subscription (sold separately)." Activision's editions page says console players need PS Plus to access online modes. The Campaign doesn't need it, but budget for PS Plus if Multiplayer or DMZ is the reason you're buying.

Activision's support page also warns that accounts permanently banned from earlier Call of Duty games may not be able to play MW4's online modes.

PS4 and PS5 Pro

There's no PS4 version on PlayStation. The store text reads: "Available on PS5, not available on PS4." The listing carries a PS5 Pro Enhanced tag, though Sony doesn't spell out what that changes.

What's in Multiplayer and DMZ at launch

Per the PlayStation Blog's launch post, Multiplayer arrives with 12 core 6v6 maps, dedicated Gunfight maps and several Big War maps for large vehicle and infantry fights. There's also a new mode called Kill Block, set in a live-fire training facility that reconfigures between rounds. Gunplay runs on a new system Activision calls Ballistic Authority, and its promise is short: "no bloom."

DMZ got its own explainer on the PlayStation Blog on 5 Oct. The basics:

  • It launches alongside Campaign and Multiplayer on 23 Oct.
  • You play in and around Hajin, and return to a Forward Operating Base that grows as you progress, adding stations like a 3D Printer, Gunsmith and Vendor.
  • There's a dedicated DMZ progression track from 1 to 70.
  • You choose from three deployment types: Story Missions, Dynamic Operations and Free Roam.

Activision says to "expect additional content in the updates to come." Its support page also notes that DMZ and Multiplayer need a continuous internet connection.

Pre-order, wait, or skip?

Pre-order digital if you want the Campaign from 16 Oct and you're certain you'll buy. The Standard Digital Edition is enough for early access. Pick Vault only if you want its extra content, and check whether the 10% loyalty discount applies to your account.

Wait for launch if you mainly play Multiplayer or DMZ. Both open for everyone on 23 Oct, so a pre-order only gets you cosmetics and a Campaign head start. We're not predicting review scores.

Buy physical only if you want a disc for trading in or lending. You don't get Campaign early access, and you can't upgrade a disc to Vault.

Skip for now if you don't have PS Plus and only care about online play. That's an extra subscription on top of the game. Same if you're still on a PS4, because there's no PS4 version on PlayStation.

If you game on PC handhelds instead, MW4 is also coming to Steam and Battle.net. Our Steam Deck OLED vs ROG Ally comparison looks at those devices, but check each game's requirements before you buy for one.

What we don't know yet

  • Download size, and when or whether a PS5 pre-load opens.
  • Full Vault Edition details and how the season pass plays out.
  • Review scores. No word on when reviews land.
  • Physical edition prices in South Africa. Retailers set them.

The Joburg reality check

On the official South African PlayStation Store, Standard was listed at R1,499 and Vault at R1,999 when we checked on 8 Oct. The SA listing shows the game going live at midnight SAST on 23 Oct, while the US listing shows 04:00 UTC (06:00 SAST). Re-check on the day, because listings can change.

Activision hasn't published MW4's download size yet. Whatever it turns out to be, don't burn a capped mobile bundle on it. Download on fibre, ideally overnight. Our fibre vs mobile data guide breaks down the real costs.

And remember PS Plus is a separate monthly or yearly cost if you plan to play online. Add it to the price before you decide.
