On 16 Sep 2026, Anthropic folded Cowork into chat and shipped Claude Docs and Claude Slides (plus Design) inside conversations. Freelancers drafting proposals, SOWs, and client decks suddenly hear “do it all in Claude” — which sounds clean until you hit plan gates, export limits, and the deck you already bill through Gamma.
This is a try Claude desk / keep Gamma or Word / skip sheet. Not a rewrite of the Gamma AI client decks post — Gamma stays the specialized client-facing deck desk. Not an Opus upgrade sheet — that lives on Claude Opus 5.5 for freelancers. Here the only question is which proposal or deck jobs stay inside Claude Docs and Slides versus the Word, PowerPoint, or Gamma stack you already ship.

What shipped 16 Sep 2026
Anthropic’s Claude apps release notes for 16 Sep 2026 describe a new experience that makes Cowork capabilities available from any conversation — ask a quick question or hand Claude a bigger task (report, spreadsheet, presentation) without choosing a mode first. Chats, Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, and skills carry over. The same notes say you can ask for a design, deck, or document in any conversation, including in Claude Code and the Artifacts tab, and edit with Claude or directly as you work.
Claude Docs is framed as living documents with Claude and your team. Claude Slides gives presentations their own starting point. Claude Design keeps on-canvas editing and design-system import. Treat that as Anthropic’s shipping language — useful direction, not a promise that Claude replaces every Word or PowerPoint handoff this week.
The One Claude UI is rolling out gradually to Pro and Max on web, desktop, and mobile (see also Anthropic’s Cowork/chat help). If your account still shows separate Cowork chrome, that is a rollout gate, not a broken install.
Plan gates freelancers must get right
Three layers get mashed together in secondary posts. Keep them separate.
Artifacts exist across Free through Enterprise (and in Claude Code on plans that include it), per the artifacts Help Center article. Cloud code execution and file creation must be on in Capabilities settings.
Templates — Claude Design, Claude Slides, and Claude Docs — are beta on paid plans only. They are on by default on Pro, Max, and Team. On Enterprise, they are off until an owner turns each one on. That paid-only Templates line is the gate freelancers miss when a Free account can make generic artifacts but cannot start from Docs/Slides templates.
Claude Docs specifically is beta on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise — not Free — per Get started with Claude Docs. On by default for Pro/Max/Team; off by default on Enterprise until an owner enables it under Organization settings > Artifacts. Docs help also notes it is not available yet for organizations on CMEK, ZDR, or HIPAA-ready configurations.
Wording tension to watch: the 16 Sep release notes say Artifacts including Design/Slides/Docs are available on every plan, including Free. The Help Center Templates and Docs articles are stricter (Templates paid-only; Docs not Free). For freelancer plan decisions, prefer the Help Center gates and re-check your account screen before you promise a Free-plan client a Docs template workflow.
Usage for Docs/Slides/Design counts toward shared plan limits. Larger drafts from several sources use more of the limit than a typical message — quote what your plan meter shows; do not invent message caps.
Claude Docs for proposals and SOWs
Ask for a doc in any conversation (or start from the Artifacts tab / /docs). Claude can draw on files, memory, projects, skills, and connected apps, then draft on screen. You edit directly, ask for the next pass, or leave comments and mention @Claude for an in-thread edit. Exports: Word (.docx), PDF, Markdown, and Google Docs — cite the Docs help article, not a secondary “Claude replaces Word forever” claim.
Team and Enterprise cannot share docs outside the organization by link or email invitation yet. There is no comment-only access level. Version history is not available yet. Deleting a doc is permanent. Mobile can view; template start, edit, and sharing settings stay on web/desktop.
Practical freelance fit: try Docs on one proposal or SOW you already understand, on a Pro/Max seat, when the client will accept an exported Word/PDF/Google Docs handoff. Keep Word or Google Docs when the client requires their template, tracked changes, or legal redlines you already bill for. SA packaging only: if the client’s counsel wants Word track-changes, that is a deliverable constraint — not a reason to invent ZAR savings from switching tools.
Co-editing inside Docs is useful when you and a collaborator already share a Claude account path — still not a substitute for a client’s locked Word template. Charts and diagrams Claude inserts do not auto-refresh when source data changes; ask Claude to pull the latest numbers before you send. That single habit prevents “stale slide in a living doc” surprises on Friday.
Coding-desk contrast stays on Cursor Projects if you need an IDE habit sibling; this section is document craft inside Claude, not repo ship flow.
Claude Slides vs keep Gamma
Claude Slides: edit slides directly, present inside Claude, export to PowerPoint or PDF (artifacts help). Strong try path when the brief already lives in the same chat — notes, research, and a first deck draft without leaving the conversation.
Keep Gamma when the polished client-facing deck is the product: brand kits, narrative polish, and the workflow you already quote. The live Gamma sheet covers that desk; do not rewrite it here. Try Claude Slides once for a first draft from chat context, export PPTX or PDF, then decide whether Gamma (or PowerPoint) still owns the final pass.
Skip inventing earnings from “ditching Gamma.” One logged deck brief with rework time beats a launch slogan. Export is the proof step: open the PPTX or PDF outside Claude and check fonts, margins, and speaker notes before you call the try a win. If cleanup takes longer than your Gamma polish pass, Claude Slides stays a draft desk — Gamma (or PowerPoint) keeps the billable final.
Browser-desk try/skip framing, if you want a parallel decision shape, sits on Perplexity Comet for freelancers — different product, same “try once, then keep or skip” habit. Agents API meters are a separate coding desk; leave them on the Agents API freelancer budget sheet unless the SOW mixes research docs with hosted agents.
Buy/skip matrix (sheet)
| Job | Try Claude Docs | Try Claude Slides | Keep Gamma / Word / PPT | Skip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One proposal or SOW on Pro/Max | Yes — draft + export | — | If client template / track-changes required | If Free plan |
| First deck draft from chat context | — | Yes — then export PPTX/PDF | Gamma for polished client-facing final | As only client deck desk without a try row |
| Client-facing deck you already bill on Gamma | — | Optional first draft only | Yes — keep Gamma | Forced full switch this week |
| Client requires Word/Google Docs template | Export into their file, or stay native | — | Yes — keep their stack | Promising “Claude-only” handoff |
| Free plan | No Docs templates | No Slides templates | Yes — current tools | Until paid plan |
| Enterprise, templates not enabled | After owner enables | After owner enables | Yes meanwhile | Assuming defaults are on |
| Team/Enterprise share outside org | Weak — outside share blocked | Check artifact share rules | Often yes for external clients | Link-only external SOW on Team/Ent |

This week’s action — one real proposal or deck, then one sheet row
Pick one real proposal or deck brief. On Pro or Max, draft it in Claude Docs or Claude Slides. Export once (Word/PDF/Markdown/Google Docs for Docs; PowerPoint or PDF for Slides). Compare rework time against your current Gamma, Word, or PowerPoint path. Fill one sheet row: keep Claude for first drafts / keep Gamma for client-facing decks / keep Word or Google Docs when the client owns the template / skip Free-plan template promises / skip Enterprise until the owner enables Artifacts templates.
If export cleanup eats the time you hoped to save, keep the stack that already ships and treat Claude as an optional draft desk. Do not change a production client workflow mid-week on a release-notes paragraph alone. If you are on Team or Enterprise and need an outside-org share, export to Word or PowerPoint and send from the tool the client already accepts — do not fight a share gate on a deadline.
