Perplexity Comet for Freelancers: Keep Chrome, Switch, or Skip?
Proposal research still means twenty Chrome tabs, messy paste into ChatGPT, and a half-finished competitor table. Perplexity Comet is an AI browser — Chromium with an assistant in the browse loop — not another chat tab. Freelancers need a keep / trial / skip sheet: when free Comet is enough, when Pro or Max browser-agent limits matter, and when client data should never touch an AI browser at all.
This is not a Perplexity-vs-ChatGPT answer-engine crown. That shootout stays separate if and when it ships. Here the job is the research desk.

Comet is a browser, not another chat tab
Perplexity’s Comet product page frames it as a personal AI assistant inside a browser: research the page you are on, organise tabs, draft email, build light pages, shop — with downloads listed for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, and free download framing on the marketing site. The assistant sits beside the main window so you can ask and act without bouncing every page into a separate chat product.
That matters for freelancers because the bottleneck is often assembly while browsing, not “which model wrote the paragraph.” Chrome + Perplexity web (or ChatGPT) still works: open tabs, copy, paste, summarise. Comet collapses the loop when the page itself is the context.
Install it like any Chromium browser, then treat the assistant as optional power — not as a requirement to abandon bookmarks, password managers, or your client’s preferred browser overnight.
Freelance jobs that fit — and jobs that stay elsewhere
Fit well: competitor pricing tables scraped from public pages; RFQ source packs from vendor docs sites; “summarise this docs portal and list gaps”; tab clean-up before you write the proposal; light “organise my research tabs” passes.
Stay in grounded packs: multi-PDF client packs with citations you must pin to sources belong in a notebook-style workflow — see Gemini Notebook for client research packs. Comet can help find the PDFs; it should not replace a source-grounded deliverable process.
Stay in prompts / writing tools for the write step: once the research pack exists, proposal drafting is still a writing job — ChatGPT prompts for freelance proposals and best AI writing tools 2026. Do not ask Comet to “win” a writing-tool shootout it was not built for.
Skip the digression: NDA portals, client admin consoles, payroll, banking, and anything where an assistant with Browser Control would be a contract problem — even if the feature is impressive.
A practical pattern that works for many solo shops: keep Chrome (or your studio default) as the forever browser for email, bank, and client logins. Open Comet as a second profile dedicated to public research weeks. That split costs nothing but discipline, and it makes the buy/skip decision less dramatic than “replace my whole browser.”
Long research sessions on mobile data chew meters differently than fibre; packaging only, no invented GB figures — fibre vs mobile data for AI work.
Free download vs paid seats — what actually gates the heavy stuff
Comet the browser is free to download. The assistant workload rides your Perplexity plan. Live hub pricing (re-pulled 24 Sep 2026 SAST) shows consumer Free at $0/month, Pro at $20/month, and Max at $200/month. Perplexity’s Max help article matches Max at $200/monthly or $2000/annually (annual on web). Re-check before you treat those numbers as eternal.
What freelancers care about for Comet specifically:
- Free — good for installing the browser, light assistant use, and a research-week trial without paying for a new Chromium skin.
- Pro — more research / model headroom for serious weekly searching; browser-agent quotas on consumer Pro are often described with soft “average use” language rather than a single public number — plan capacity from your own usage, not a blog table.
- Max — Max Assistant on Comet, highest weekly browser-agent limits among consumer tiers (per Max help), plus the wider Max suite. Perplexity’s October 2025 changelog historically tied Background Assistants (parallel agentic tasks) to Max; treat Background Assistants / heavy parallel agents as a Max-gated reason to upgrade, not something Free unlocks forever. Product names move — verify in-app.
Enterprise seats add admin controls and published enterprise caps that consumer pages do not always mirror. Solo freelancers rarely need Enterprise on day one; client orgs might.
Do not upgrade to Max “because Comet exists.” Upgrade when Background Assistants / Max Assistant limits are the actual bottleneck after a Free/Pro trial week.
Why this sheet now: Enterprise admin and permissions docs for Comet Assistant were refreshed through September 2026, which is a solid “client IT will ask” moment even if you are still on Free. Global free download for Comet landed earlier (Perplexity’s own changelog framed worldwide free availability around early October 2025). The freelance decision did not change with marketing calendar — the permissions language just got easier to cite when a client asks who can click on their domains.
Client-data caution
An AI browser that can click, fill forms, and read the page is a different risk shape from a chat tab you paste into. Default rule for freelance SOWs: public research yes; authenticated client systems no — unless the client’s security review explicitly allows it and you have written scope.
History, profiles, and connected accounts travel with the browser. Incognito habits help; they do not rewrite an NDA. If the SOW forbids AI tooling on client systems, Comet is a skip for that engagement even if you love it for public competitor scans.
Enterprise permission controls — when a client org might care
Perplexity’s help article on Managing Comet Assistant permissions (Enterprise admins) documents organisation-wide controls: enable or disable Comet controlling the browser; optional “Always Allow” without confirm; and domain-specific permissions set to Browser Control, Read Only, or No Access. Domain settings can override global assistant permissions — which is exactly the kind of detail a client IT team will ask about.
If you freelanced inside a client’s Enterprise tenant, expect admin policy — not your personal Free/Pro defaults. Point them at Perplexity’s Comet Enterprise / permissions docs rather than inventing a security whitepaper in the SOW.

This week — rebuild one past proposal pack in Comet Free for 45 minutes
Pick one finished proposal whose research was tab chaos. Install Comet Free. Rebuild only the research half for 45 minutes: competitor pages, pricing notes, open questions. Export or paste into your normal writing tool. Compare: fewer tabs? Better source list? Or the same mess with a side panel?
If Free felt fine, keep Chrome as default and Comet as a research profile. If you hit assistant limits mid-table, note whether Pro would have been enough before you jump to Max. If the SOW would have forbidden the browse, write that skip rule into your next proposal template so you do not argue with yourself under deadline.
Write three lines in your notes after the timer: (1) what the side panel saved you from copying, (2) what you still had to verify by hand, (3) whether the client’s data rules would have allowed the session. Those three lines beat a vague “AI browser is the future” paragraph in your next process doc.
