Gemini Skills Replace Gems: What Freelancers Should Do Before November

On 30 Sep 2026 Google said skills will replace Gems in Gemini. If you built a Gem for a client's brand voice, a proposal format, or a monthly report, that Gem now has an end date. For personal Google accounts, Gems support starts going away in November 2026. Workspace business accounts get until March 2027. Education gets until June 2027.

Gemini skills replace Gems for everyone in the end, but you don't have to move everything this week. Migrate now if a few client Gems carry your week. Wait if they're casual. Rebuild twice if you work in a personal account and a Workspace domain. Keep the Gem if it leans on Canvas or Deep Research. Dates and the full sheet are below.

Affiliate disclosure: some tool or platform links may later be affiliate or referral links. Product facts below come from Google's Workspace Updates post, two Gemini Apps Help pages, and Google's skills announcement, as of 6 Oct 2026 (SAST). The rollout is gradual and Google is still updating its Help pages, so re-check before you delete anything. Not legal advice. Not a guarantee of clients, savings, or income.

What's changing, and when

A skill is a reusable set of custom instructions. You call it with / in any Gemini chat, and Google says @ is coming. Gemini can also apply an active skill on its own when it fits your prompt. A Gem was a separate chat you had to open first. A skill sits inside the chat you're already in.

Google will recreate your remaining Gems as skills when Gems go away, "along with any supported files". The Workspace Updates post says they arrive as draft skills. You can also migrate by hand at any time before that.

Google hasn't said which day in November personal Gems stop. If a client deliverable depends on a Gem, treat 1 November as your deadline. That's the safe reading, not a Google date.

The decision: migrate, wait, rebuild twice, or keep the Gem

MIGRATE NOW (by hand) if you run one to three client-critical Gems every week, they have knowledge files attached, and they live on a personal Google account. Rebuild the top ones as skills. Keep the Gem running beside them until November. Test each skill on a non-client prompt first.

WAIT for auto-migration if your Gems are casual, text-only, or rarely opened. Google will turn them into draft skills. Put a November note in your calendar to review those drafts. A draft you never check isn't one you should trust with a client.

REBUILD TWICE (on purpose) if you work in a personal Gemini account and in a client's or your own Workspace domain. Skills don't sync between the two. Keep one master SKILL.md folder on disk and upload it to each place.

KEEP THE GEM FOR NOW if the Gem depends on Canvas, Deep Research, Create video, Create music, or Guided learning. Skills don't support those yet. Don't delete anything until they do.

What skills do better than Gems

  • They work in any chat. Type / and pick the skill.
  • They stack. Google's Help says you can use several skills in one prompt. Brand voice plus proposal format is one message, not two Gems.
  • Gemini can apply them by itself. If a skill is active and fits the request, Gemini may use it without being asked. Handy for a house style. It also means you should name and describe each skill clearly, so the wrong client's voice doesn't turn up.
  • They're portable. Skills use SKILL.md, an open, Markdown-based format. You can import a skill built on another platform by uploading its SKILL.md file. Instructions you write once aren't locked to Google.

Gemini isn't the only tool moving this way. We covered Notion 3.7 agent skills last month, and Claude's docs and slides are pulling client documents into the chat too. Reusable instructions are becoming the thing you own, so keep them in plain files.

A good first skill is the proposal prompt you already reuse. If you keep one from our ChatGPT prompts for freelance proposals guide, paste it in as the instructions and call it with / next time a brief lands.

What you lose, for now

Per Google's Help page on skills and the transition page:

  • Most default Gem tools don't work with skills yet. That includes Create video, Create music, Canvas, Deep Research, and Guided learning.
  • No sharing yet. Google says sharing skills is coming "in the coming weeks". No date.
  • No Drive files or notebooks yet. Adding Drive files or Gemini Notebook notebooks is also promised "in the coming weeks". If you built Gemini Notebook research packs for clients, keep them in Notebook for now.
  • No GitHub files.
  • No .docx or .xlsx uploads. Plain text, PDF, and images are supported. Convert your style guides before you upload.
  • A 100 MB total upload cap, and scripts in a skill can't reach the internet.
  • 100 active skills at once. You can have unlimited skills, but only 100 switched on.
  • No per-skill chat history page.
  • Mobile quirks. Manually created skills won't save in the mobile app. Skills with uploaded files can't be edited on mobile or Mac.

None of that is a reason to panic. Just don't delete a Gem that does something a skill can't.

Who can use skills today

In the Gemini app, Google's Help says skills are available to people who are:

  • 18 or older
  • signed in with a personal Google account
  • using Keep Activity (it has to be on)

Work and school accounts are "coming soon". The Workspace post puts the Gemini app rollout for Workspace customers from 13 Oct. The rollout is gradual, so you may not see skills yet even if you tick every box.

No Google AI subscription is needed to use skills in chats.

For now skills work in the Gemini web app, the Gemini mobile app, and the Gemini app on Mac. Creating a skill by upload only works on web and Mac.

How to check: open Gemini and go to Settings → Skills. If it's there, you're in. If it isn't, the rollout hasn't reached your account yet. Google's skills Help doesn't publish a country list, so we won't tell you whether your country is in or out. Keep your Gems running until you see it.

On the Workspace side, skills cover Business Starter, Standard, and Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus, and some add-ons. Workspace skills are 18+ only too.

Migrate a client Gem: the checklist

Do this on the web app or the Mac app, since upload doesn't work on mobile. Steps 2 to 7 are Google's own. The first and last two are ours.

  1. Open the Gem and copy its name, description, and instructions into a plain text file. That's your backup if anything goes wrong.
  2. Download each knowledge file attached to the Gem. Convert any .docx or .xlsx to PDF or plain text.
  3. Make a folder named like the skill, lowercase with hyphens. For example acme-brand-voice. The folder name must match the skill name.
  4. Put the knowledge files in that folder.
  5. In Gemini, go to Settings → Skills → Create manually. Paste the name, description, and instructions.
  6. Download the skill zip and move the SKILL.md file into your folder.
  7. Use Replace skill and upload the whole folder.
  8. Test on a non-client prompt. Run the same prompt through the old Gem and the new skill and compare.
  9. Keep the Gem and the folder. Leave the Gem running until November. Keep the folder forever.

One folder per skill, grouped by client, is the habit that pays off. Keep an eye on the 100 MB total if you attach big PDFs.

Personal plus Workspace: build once, upload twice

Here's the rule that catches people. Skills in the Gemini app don't sync with Workspace apps. If you want a skill in both places, you create it in each place.

So don't build twice from scratch. Build once on disk:

skills/
  acme-brand-voice/
    SKILL.md
    acme-style-guide.pdf
  acme-monthly-report/
    SKILL.md
    report-template.pdf

Edit the master copy first. Then upload or replace the skill in your personal Gemini account and in the Workspace domain. When a client changes their tone of voice, you change one file and push it twice.

Timing matters too. Workspace skills reach Rapid Release domains from 5 Oct and Scheduled Release domains from 19 Oct. If a client's domain is on the slower track, their copy may have to wait. Gems on Workspace business plans also last until March 2027, so there's less rush on that side.

If you use Workspace Studio automations: you can no longer add new "Ask a Gem" steps to flows. Existing ones keep working until Gems go away for that account. If a client report runs through one, note it now and plan the swap before the cutoff.

The Joburg reality check

Moving skills is upload work: folders, PDFs, zips, then a test run. Do it on a fibre line you trust, not on mobile data halfway through a client day.

Then keep the master folder offline on your laptop, with a backup you control. Auto-migrated drafts may not carry every file, and client instructions shouldn't live only inside one Google feature. With the folder on your disk, a lost Gem never means a lost client voice. That's how we'd run it from a Joburg desk. It works the same anywhere.

FAQ

Do I need Google AI Pro to use skills?
No. Google's Help says skills in Gemini chats are available without a Google AI subscription. Spark tasks and schedules do need one.

Will my Gems' knowledge files come across?
Google says auto-migration recreates Gems as skills "along with any supported files". It hasn't confirmed that every file type survives, and .docx and .xlsx aren't supported in skills. Migrate client-critical Gems by hand and keep your own copies.

Can I share a skill with a client?
Not yet. Google says sharing is coming in the coming weeks, with no date. For now, send the client the SKILL.md folder and let them upload it, or keep the skill on your side.

Do skills work with Deep Research?
Not yet. Deep Research, Canvas, Create video, Create music, and Guided learning don't work with skills today. Keep any Gem that relies on them until Google adds support.
