From 1 Oct 2026, Adobe opened the Firefly AI Assistant beta to all Creative Cloud plans, not just CC Pro and the paid Firefly tiers. On the same date, certain Assistant actions on paid plans started using AI credits. So the conversational agent many freelancers had only read about is probably on an account you already pay for. It also now draws on the same credit balance as your client work.
For Firefly AI Assistant freelancers the decision is small. Try it on one throwaway, non-client asset this week if you already pay for a CC or Firefly plan and do some of your work in a browser. Skip it for now if you live in desktop Photoshop or Illustrator, or your clients live in Canva. Wait if you're mid-deadline or only want it on desktop or mobile. Upgrade only after a measured dry run, never from a launch post. This isn't another generator shoot-out. That one is our live Canva Magic Studio vs Adobe Firefly comparison.

What Firefly AI Assistant actually is
Firefly AI Assistant is a beta conversational creative agent that runs inside the Firefly web app. You describe a goal in plain language, like "retouch and resize these images" or "turn these assets into a social campaign", or you start from a skill. The Assistant breaks the job into steps, picks the tools, and runs them in one chat. Adobe's overview says it draws on capabilities from Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere, Firefly, and more. You can step in at any point to accept or reject a suggestion, redirect the work, or adjust details.
It isn't a new image model or a desktop Photoshop plugin. It's a dispatcher on top of tools you've mostly seen already. According to Adobe's FAQ, it automatically chooses between Firefly models and partner models unless you name one. That detail matters later, when we get to client rights.
Skills are Adobe's word for prebuilt multi-step workflows. The FAQ names "Portrait Retouch," "Prepare Product Photos," and "Create Social Variations," plus precision tools such as blur background, auto tone, auto straighten, vectorize, generate image, transcode video, and generative expand. Call one directly (the FAQ's example is /batch-edit-photos) or let the Assistant pick. Custom skills aren't supported yet.
Who gets it after 1 Oct, and who still doesn't
Per the FAQ (last updated 24 Sep 2026), the Assistant is available to:
- Creative Cloud Pro, Firefly Standard, Firefly Pro, Firefly Pro Plus, and Firefly Premium subscribers, and, starting 1 October 2026, all users with a Creative Cloud plan
- a subset of free Adobe accounts in select regions
- adults 18 or older
It works but isn't optimized for languages beyond English, French, German, and Japanese, for enterprise all-apps (CCT/E), or for higher education. It's unavailable to K-12 education and to some legacy enterprise plans (CCT Standard AA without SA, and CCE v3, Core, and Pro AA/SA).
The catch for desktop users: the FAQ says it's unavailable in Adobe desktop or mobile apps. If your day is a Photoshop window and an iPad, "all CC plans" still means a browser tab. Adobe hasn't published a date for desktop or mobile, and this sheet won't guess one.
Credits: what changed on 1 Oct
From 1 October 2026, certain AI Assistant actions on paid plans use your available AI credits. Adobe's FAQ says most AI-powered creative actions, like generating and editing content, use credits, and that usage varies by action. Want to know what a step cost? Hover over the credits icon after the action finishes. Adobe also says the rates are introductory and may change.
Adobe doesn't publish a per-skill price list for the Assistant, so we won't make one up. You find out by running one and reading the icon.
What Adobe does publish is how much your plan includes. The Generative credits FAQ (updated 30 Sep 2026) lists 4,000 monthly credits for premium generations on Creative Cloud Pro, and 2,000 / 4,000 / 10,000 / 50,000 on Firefly Standard, Pro, Pro Plus, and Premium. All of those plans also come with unlimited standard generations. It lists 25 monthly credits for Creative Cloud Standard and for Single App plans bought on or after 17 June 2025. Credits don't roll over. Partner models count as premium features.
The Assistant FAQ doesn't say which Assistant actions count as "standard" or "premium", so "unlimited standard" isn't a promise the Assistant is free on your plan. And on a 25-credit Single App plan, access doesn't mean room for client batches.
When you run out on a paid plan, Adobe's options are: upgrade your plan, buy credits, or wait for your monthly refresh on your billing date. Free accounts get a limited number of daily free generations on the Assistant, which refresh daily at midnight GMT (2am SAST).
If you already budget API meters, the same habit applies (our API cost guide for freelancers covers it). Just don't carry those numbers over to Adobe.
A freelancer workflow on paper
This is a test plan built from Adobe's docs, not a hands-on credit log.
- Pick a throwaway product shot. Your own mug, never a live client file.
- Ask for Prepare Product Photos, either by naming the skill or by describing the outcome ("clean background, even tone, square crop").
- Watch the plan. The Assistant should break the job into steps. Reject any step you wouldn't bill for.
- Hover the credits icon after each completed action and write the number down.
- Ask for Create Social Variations on the approved still: a story size, a feed square, a landscape banner.
- Course-correct in plain words. The FAQ says you can describe what's off and keep going without starting over.
- Total the credits and compare with your usual desktop Photoshop or Canva time.
That one row tells you more than any launch video. Adobe's overview also lists batch photo edits, brand kits, on-brand mockups, storyboards, and a UGC-style ad from a product photo. Test video separately: Adobe's credits FAQ charges more for video than for stills.
Commercial use and partner models
Adobe's FAQ says outputs generated with Firefly models inside the Assistant are considered safe for commercial use. For partner models, you decide whether that model is appropriate for your project. Because the Assistant picks models automatically unless you name one, you can't assume every asset in a chat came from Firefly.
Adobe's Generative credits FAQ adds one more beta-specific line: beta Firefly outputs can be used commercially unless the product says otherwise, but for eligible teams and enterprise customers, beta outputs are not indemnified. That's Adobe's wording. We're not adding any protection of our own.
Before you hand over a client file, ask yourself:
- Do I know which model made this asset? If not, ask for a Firefly model and regenerate.
- If it's a partner model, have I read its commercial terms?
- Does the client contract say anything about AI-generated work?
- Do I have a clean export and the prompt on record?
If you're still choosing a generator, not an agent, the rights trade-offs in Midjourney vs free alternatives are a good next read.
Try / Skip / Wait / Upgrade sheet
Try if you pay for any Creative Cloud or Firefly plan, have a browser-friendly job this week (product stills, a social size pack, a brand-kit draft), and can spend a few credits on a non-client dry run.
Skip for now if you work entirely in desktop Photoshop or Illustrator, need mobile editing, have clients who won't leave Canva, or sit on a legacy enterprise or K-12 plan Adobe lists as unavailable. Stick with desktop generative features and Canva Magic Studio; the Canva vs Firefly comparison covers that split.
Wait if you only want the Assistant once it reaches desktop or mobile, or you're mid-deadline and can't risk beta quirks and unknown per-action credit costs.
Upgrade or buy credits only after a dry run shows Assistant work you'll repeat every month, and only through Adobe's own upgrade or credit add-on options. We won't name a Firefly tier that "earns its keep". Nobody has measured that for your work.
| Situation | Try | Skip | Wait | Upgrade / buy credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Already on Creative Cloud Pro | Yes: one non-client dry run, icon watched | If you never open Firefly web | If mid-deadline | Only after a logged monthly pattern |
| Single App Photoshop only | Small test; check your plan's credit line first | Yes if you're desktop-only | For desktop Assistant (no date) | Only if repeat Assistant work proves out |
| Canva-only freelancer | Not as a client tool yet | Yes: stay in Canva | — | No reason yet |
| Free Adobe account | If your region shows it; daily cap applies | If it isn't offered to you | — | Only after the free cap clearly limits real work |
| Video-heavy month | One short test on a throwaway clip | For client deadlines this week | Yes, until you've read the credit icon on video steps | Only if video repeats monthly |
| Legacy enterprise or K-12 plan | — | Yes: listed as unavailable | For a plan change | Talk to your admin, not a launch post |

The Joburg reality check
A web agent needs a stable connection. Run your test on fibre you trust, not mobile data during load-shedding, and not on a paid brief. Keep a desktop PSD or layered export as the handoff file. Adobe's beta terms say a beta may contain bugs and may never become a commercial release. Treat it as a sketchpad, not a vault.
FAQ
Is Firefly AI Assistant free on every CC plan now?
Access opened to all Creative Cloud plans on 1 Oct 2026, but it isn't unmetered. On paid plans, certain actions use AI credits. Free accounts in select regions get limited daily generations.
Does it work in Photoshop desktop?
No. Adobe's FAQ lists the Assistant as unavailable in Adobe desktop and mobile apps. It runs in the Firefly web app only, as a beta.
Will it use my generative credits?
On paid plans, yes for certain actions from 1 Oct 2026. Hover the credits icon after each action to see what it used. Adobe calls the rates introductory and says they may change.
Are outputs safe for client commercial work?
Adobe says Firefly-model outputs in the Assistant are considered safe for commercial use. For partner-model outputs, you're responsible for deciding whether that model suits the project, so check which model made each asset before you deliver.
