Can a Jailbroken PS5 Get Banned? What Sony’s Terms Say

Yes. Sony's own Terms let it suspend your PlayStation account and your console if you run modified software or get around its security. That holds whether or not anyone has seen a ban happen.

Someone has reported one. On 8 October 2026, Twisted Voxel reported a single case of a jailbroken PS5 being cut off after going online. It's a second-hand report, the original post was deleted, and we couldn't verify it independently. Sony hasn't said anything about it.

Facts in this post come from Sony's US PlayStation Terms of Service (April 2026), the PS5 System Software License Agreement, PlayStation Support pages and press reports, checked on 8 Oct 2026 (SAST). This is not legal advice.

What Sony's rules say

Three documents matter, and they say the same thing in different ways.

The Terms of Service. Section 10.6 says you "may not bypass, disable, or circumvent any encryption, security, digital rights management or authentication mechanism." Section 12.2 lets SIE "restrict, suspend or terminate your Account and PlayStation Device" if you break the agreement, or if it has "a reasonable belief such a violation has or will occur." Section 1.8 adds that a breach can mean "temporary or permanent suspension of your console or your Account," including child accounts set up under yours.

The PS5 licence. The System Software License Agreement bars using "any unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit or modified hardware or software with System Software" and using "tools to bypass, disable or circumvent any PS5 system encryption, security or authentication mechanism." That's what a jailbreak does.

The Code of Conduct. Sony's Code of Conduct asks anyone who finds a vulnerability to report it through its HackerOne bug bounty, not to use it.

One caution. These are grounds for action. They don't tell us whether Sony detects a jailbreak, how, or how often. Nobody outside Sony has published that.

Account ban vs console ban

These are different penalties, and the console one is the one people underestimate. The table draws on Sony's Suspensions page and the Terms (§12.5).

Online multiplayerBlockedBlocked
Paid-for contentSome unusable, "even ones you paid for"Store purchases unusable on that console

Termination is the end point. Under §12.3, the Terms say trophies, virtual currency and subscriptions "will not be retained or accessible," and that termination "is irreversible," with no refunds except where the law requires them. A console suspension blocks services "even if you create a new one." If your games library and online play matter, that's the real cost. Our Modern Warfare 4 pre-order guide is a reminder of how much of a modern game sits online.

The PS5 licence lists its own remedies too. Section 6 lets SIE disable "use of this PS5 system online or offline," end access to PlayStation services, deny "any warranty, repair or other services," and push "automatic or mandatory updates." It also leaves room for legal action.

Sony's Suspensions page says the type and length depend on "the severity of the violation and the player's offense history." It adds: "For the most serious breaches, we may suspend your PlayStation console." You'd see an error code at sign-in, and Sony says it usually sends an email.

What WS-116332-6 means

This is the code in the 8 October report. Sony's error page says: "Access from your PlayStation®5 console may be prohibited or temporarily unavailable." It may be prohibited "due to reasons such as violation of the terms of service." If not, it can be a temporary server problem, and Sony suggests checking server status.

So the code alone doesn't prove a jailbreak ban. It's a generic "you can't get in" message.

The 8 October report

Here's how the story travelled, according to Twisted Voxel:

  1. A member of an unofficial Turkish PlayStation Facebook group posted that they'd connected a jailbroken PS5 to the internet and been "permanently banned."
  2. The member later deleted the post. A group moderator re-shared the warning.
  3. The X account oliver_drk passed it on, and Twisted Voxel wrote it up.

The report says the account and console were unusable for online services. It says a screenshot showed WS-116332-6 with a message that access was "permanently or temporarily suspended," and that the user had bought the PS5 three months earlier.

What we can't confirm: whether it was the account, the console or both, and whether it's permanent. The report says "permanently"; the quoted screen text says "permanently or temporarily." It's one case, second-hand, with the original post gone.

Can you appeal?

Sometimes. Sony's Suspensions page says, "We offer the opportunity to appeal in certain cases." It lists account-debt suspensions and permanent account suspensions.

Second-hand consoles are a different story. Sony's page asks, "Can a second-hand PlayStation console suspension be lifted?" and answers: "No. If you have purchased a suspended PlayStation console, please contact the seller for help." If you're buying used, our grey-import and marketplace checklist helps.

Who should worry

Plain decision sheet:

  • Stay stock if your account holds digital games, PS Plus, wallet funds or trophies you care about. The Terms allow suspending the console and the account, and terminated accounts aren't refunded.
  • Read, don't act if you're following the Relapse headlines. One reported case doesn't prove a crackdown, and no reports wouldn't prove safety.
  • Security researchers: Sony's sanctioned channel is HackerOne.
  • Never buy a console that might be suspended. Sony says a second-hand console suspension can't be lifted. Ask the seller to show it signing in online before you pay.
  • Want an open device for emulators or homebrew? A PC handheld doesn't put a PSN account at stake. See our Steam Deck OLED vs ROG Ally guide.
  • In South Africa? Sony's South African Terms (April 2026) also let it suspend an account for a breach. A suspended console from a local marketplace is the seller's problem only if you can still reach them.

FAQ

Will I get banned just for jailbreaking?
Sony's Terms give it grounds to. Whether and how it detects a jailbreak is unknown.

Do I lose my digital games?
On a suspended console, you can't use PlayStation Store purchases. If the account is terminated, the Terms say it's irreversible and unrefunded.

Can a suspended console be fixed?
Not if you bought it second-hand already suspended. Sony says to contact the seller.

Is Sony suspending jailbroken consoles in large numbers?
There's no sign of that. Sony has made no statement, and the 8 October story is one reported case.
