AI vs jobs: what’s safe in SA?
Which work is exposed, which still needs a person in the room, and what to practise if your job is mostly typing.

AI vs jobs: what's safe in SA?

If your job is copying information from one form to another, AI will eat the boring middle of it. If your job is standing with a customer, fixing a pipe, driving a route, or making a call in a language a model still mangles, you have more time — but not infinite time.

More exposed

  • Basic copywriting and captions
  • First-draft reports and minutes
  • Simple data capture
  • Generic tutoring worksheets

Safer for longer

  • Trades and on-site work
  • Nursing, teaching in a real classroom, social work
  • Sales that depend on trust in a community
  • Anything that needs a signature, a licence, or a body in a room

Safe is the wrong word. Useful is better. People who combine a local job with AI for the paperwork part will look faster than people who refuse the tool and people who think the tool is the whole job.

If you work in an office, spend one lunchtime this week taking a task you already do and running it through Claude. Keep the judgement. Give away the blank page.
