OpenAI’s flagship GPT-6 Astra sits on the public API at five times Sol’s Standard input list and five times Sol’s Standard output list. Freelancers who already pointed everyday coding and agent work at gpt-6-sol (and high-volume clerical at Luna) now get the next question: when does the premium row earn a seat, and when is “stay on Sol” the honest answer?
This is a when to pay / stay Sol / skip Fast sheet. Not a Sol-vs-Luna rewrite — that tier chooser after the Sep 22 cut is live on GPT-6 Sol vs Luna for freelancers. Not an Agents harness tutorial — tool and container meters stay on the Agents API freelancer budget post. Here the only job is which GPT-6 model ID to point at a hard client brief, with a spend cap you can defend on the next invoice.

What Astra is on the API (plain English)
On the GPT-6 Astra model page, OpenAI positions Astra as its most capable model for the hardest end-to-end work: complex reasoning, coding, computer use, research, and document creation. The API model ID is gpt-6-astra. Context window is 1,050,000 tokens. Max output is 128,000. Knowledge cutoff is 30 Apr 2026. Reasoning effort supports low, medium, high, xhigh, and max.
Treat that positioning as OpenAI’s product language, not a Mr1Tech bake-off against Sol. The practical freelance read is simpler: Astra is the premium ID you reach for when Sol already failed acceptance criteria, burned retries, or when the brief itself is highest-stakes agentic / computer-use work and the client will pay for fewer loops.
The GPT-6 Astra launch post frames rollout to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise over coming days, plus the OpenAI API, Azure, and Bedrock. Usage on ChatGPT is described as sitting inside existing subscription allowances, with credits for extra usage — quote what your account screen shows. Do not invent Plus/Pro message caps from secondary blogs; those quotas are UNKNOWN unless OpenAI Help or primary pricing states them for your plan.
Free API tier: Astra is not supported on the Free row of the model-page rate-limits table. If you only hold a free key, this seat is not available until you move onto a paid usage tier.
The price sheet freelancers actually need
USD Standard list rates per 1M tokens from the official model pages (re-checked 28 Sep 2026 SAST):
- Astra (model page): $10.00 input / $1.00 cached input / $12.50 cache writes / $50.00 output.
- Sol (model page): $2.00 input / $0.20 cached input / $2.50 cache writes / $10.00 output.
That is the 5× input / 5× output gap freelancers feel on the quote. Cache writes on both pages are billed at 1.25× the uncached input rate (Astra’s $12.50 and Sol’s $2.50 match that math). Prompts with more than 272K input tokens are priced at 2× input and cache rates and 1.5× output for the full request — on both Astra and Sol. Dumping a giant repo “because context is 1.05M” can flip the whole request onto the long row.
Batch and Flex are 50% of Standard. Fast mode is 2× the applicable rates. The Astra launch post states the same Standard $10 / $50 pair and says Fast delivers up to 2× Standard speed at 2× Standard price. Tool-specific fees (search, computer use, and friends) may add per-call charges — see OpenAI’s pricing page; do not invent tool dollars here.
Rand clients still see USD API invoices. Card and billing-country quirks at signup are real for international freelancers — verify at platform.openai.com; do not invent FX markups or average freelancer Astra bills.
ChatGPT naming vs API ID
Launch posts and ChatGPT UI labels are not the same thing as the API string gpt-6-astra. Work/Codex surfaces and Chat mode can differ by product gate — the Sol/Luna post covers Chat vs Work for those tiers. For Astra, quote the model page for API rates and your ChatGPT plan screen for included usage. Never paste a blog’s “messages per day” number into a client SOW.
Cross-vendor Claude ↔ OpenAI $/MTok stays on the live API cost ladder. This sheet does not replace that ladder; it only chooses the GPT-6 premium ID versus Sol.
When Astra earns a seat
Give Astra a seat when the job is hard agentic, multi-file coding, computer use, research, or document creation where Sol already failed acceptance criteria or burned retries you will not bill again. Frame that as job criteria on a logged row — not a vendor win-rate percentage from a launch chart.
It also earns a seat when the client will pay a premium for fewer retries, you can set a hard USD spend cap, and you will log the meter. Research or docs briefs that need max reasoning effort are candidates — still with a named brief and a stop line, not “always max because Astra exists.”
If your Agents API harness already assumes gpt-6-astra for highest-stakes runs, keep that sample path — but meter tools and containers separately on the Agents budget sheet. Cursor workspace habits (folders, rules, ship flow) stay on Cursor Projects; this section is only which model ID you point at the job.
Skip inventing earnings from “switching to Astra.” One finished Sol job that needed rework, re-run once under a spend cap, is the only proof that belongs in your sheet.
When to stay on Sol (or Luna)
Stay on Sol when everyday coding and agent workflows already finish inside budget and review time. Sol is the seat OpenAI built for complex coding and agentic work at $2 / $10 Standard — using Astra as a vanity default after Sol cleared the brief is spend, not craft.
Stay on Luna for high-volume extract, summary, and clerical batch work when that desk already wins on meter. The Sol-vs-Luna chooser after the Sep 22 cut is the sibling for that split — cross-link it; do not rewrite it here.
Stay on Sol for cache-heavy loops where Sol’s $0.20 cached input already wins the quote math. Stay when the Agents harness is already budgeted on Sol and you have no failed Sol row. Stay when Fast marketing tempts you but latency is not billable — Fast is 2× rates, not a free speed knob. Stay when you would dump a prompt near or over 272K without a reason; the long-context surcharge hits the full request on both models, so split when you can.
If the SOW locks a mid-tier ID, or review time on Sol is already the billable bottleneck, a second premium model that needs the same human pass does not cut the quote.
Buy/skip matrix (sheet)
| Job | Try Astra + spend cap | Stay Sol | Luna / volume | Skip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hard agentic / coding / computer-use SOW; Sol already failed or burned retries | Yes — one named job | First A/B before Astra | Weak | As default desk |
| Everyday coding Sol already ships inside budget | No | Yes | — | Premium vanity upgrade |
| High-volume extract / summary / clerical batch | Overkill | If quality fails Luna | Yes — first | Astra as volume seat |
| “Turn on Fast — twice the speed” | Only if latency is billable | Often enough | — | If Fast is not billable |
| Giant prompt near/over 272K | Meter full-request 2×/1.5× | Same cliff — prefer split | Same family rules | Dump without a reason |
| Agents harness already budgeted on Sol | Only after a failed Sol row | Yes | — | Third meter with no failed row |
| Free API tier only | Not supported | Not on Free either | Check Luna gates | Until paid usage tier |

This week’s action — one finished Sol job, then one sheet row
Pick one finished Sol job that needed rework. Same brief, same acceptance criteria, non-secret materials only. Re-run it once on gpt-6-astra with a hard USD spend cap — Standard first, not Fast, unless latency is the billable problem. Log tokens, rework minutes, and whether you tripped the 272K long-context cliff. Fill one sheet row: keep premium for this job class / stay Sol / skip Fast claims / skip dumping giant prompts without a reason.
If the rework surprise is small and the meter is large, stay on Sol. If Sol still fails and Astra clears acceptance inside the cap, keep Astra as a named premium path — not your default desk. Do not change a production default mid-client week on a launch post alone.
